How to Take Care Of A Hamster
Hamster CareAre you a new pet hamster owner, or looking to own a hamster?
Hamsters are incredibly cute and super cuddly, and make great first pets for both children and adults because they are inexpensive to maintain and quite easy to take care of! However that said, as with any pet, keeping a hamster requires a commitment and responsiblity from the owner during its entire life-span, which could last anything between 2 – 4 years.
Keeping and caring for a hamster include several things. Here are a couple of them:
Getting a proper cage or housing for the hamster
A good hamster housing must be big enough for the hamster to run around, as well as provide good ventilation for the little pet. Housings can be home made (improvised) or bought from regular pet shops. Extra care must be taken in improvising a housing, because some hamsters can gnaw through some of the seemingly tough materials! Care must also be taken in choosing a bedding, because hamsters might be allergic to certain materials.
Feeding the hamster with the right foods and the right time
Hamsters will almost take a bite at anything you try to feed it, even though some foods might be detrimental to its health! So, it is important to know what kind of foods work well with your hamster. As a pet hamster owner, it is your responsibility to make sure your hamster has a healthy diet!
Providing a constant supply of fresh water
Hamsters, like all other living things, need water to survive. The best way to supply fresh water to hamsters in a cage is to use a water bottle especially designed for hamsters. You can also supply water in a bowl, but make sure the bowl doesn’t tip over, or the hamster will not risk drowning in it!
Providing toys, wheels and hiding places
These furry little pets are playful creatures, so do provide them with toys. It is also recommended to get them a wheel so they can exercise when they are awake! Another thing you need to provide them is a nest, or a hiding place. Hamster love to hide in areas of privacy when they sleep.
These are just some things you have to provide for the hamster as its owner. Remember, you are dealing with a life pet, and its health and happiness depends solely on how well you can take care of it!
